I have been studying Haggai 1 for the past three days, and I wanted to just share what God's been dropping in my spirit.
Day 1 (upon a 'random' flip of my Bible pages... roit)
Haggai 1:1-11
God speaks through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel (governor of Judah) and Joshua (the high priest, son of Jehozadak).
What? God tells them to build the House of the Lord
Why? So that He can take pleasure in it and be honored (Also, the people live in good houses while the house of God is in ruin.)
How? Go into the mountains and bring timber to build the house.
Significance:
In v.6, God points out their pointless efforts (the supply of needs but the needs not being satisfied). He explaines this is the case because the people haven't taken care of His House. Until they do, they will continue in their futile ways. Twice, God says, "Give careful thought to your ways." God's asking us to reflect on our routines and habits and really consider their outcomes.
v.9 "You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why?"- Because we are too busy with our own house while neglecting His House.
*God also called a drought on their lands that produced crops until they took care to build His House.
The message for us today:
We have neglected the House of God. This is evident in our frustrations with repeated cycles or unsatisfaction. We also have areas of droughts-nothing growing or producing. God is saying that until we take care of His House in our lives- build and uphold Him in our lives- He is not completely obligated to supply or bring satisfaction with our needs being met. God comes first, not last. Which leads me to my favorite verse, Matthew 6:33- "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well."
(TBC...)
Question: What is the House of God? (This is a two-way convo, so leave your answers please!)
